Dowdy's Game-Winning Homer Powers The Rebels Past BYU

2/19/2009 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. Ole Miss third baseman Ashley Dowdy hit Paige Affleck’s full-count offering deep to straightaway center for a game-winning three run home run in the Rebels’ 4-2 win over BYU in the first game of the Cathedral City Classic on Thursday.

Dowdy’s blast to deep center scored Alyssa McGovern and Lisa Conchos and brought Ole Miss back from a 2-1 deficit for the win. She finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and three RBI. The homer ended a 1-for-12 drought for Dowdy that stretched over five games.

“That was a really clutch hit from Ashley considering how she had been struggling lately,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “She really came up big for us.”

The Cougars took the lead in the top of the eighth inning after Andrea Ramirez singled home Angeline Quiocho, who had started the inning on second in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Michelle May pinch-hit ground rule double with two outs that scored Corrine Doornberg, who singled with one down in the inning.

BYU tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from Coreen Lopez that scored Ramirez.

Becky Nye (5-2) picked up the win for the Rebels after pitching a complete-game, allowing eight hits in 8.0 innings of work while striking out six Cougars. She gave up two runs, only one of which was earned.

Affleck took the loss for BYU after allowing four runs in 7.1 innings. She gave up five hits and struck out 10 batters.

Ole Miss will face No. 9 California tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. PT in the Rebels’ only game of the day.

Game Two

Loyola Marymount scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to knock off Ole Miss 8-6 in the second game of the day on Thursday.

MiaSarah Cesena and J.J. Hartung hit RBI singles and Sam Fischer hit a two-run single to center and scored on a throwing error by Rebel catcher Amber Tramp in the Lions’ six-run fifth.

Loyola Marymount jumped on the scoreboard in the second on an RBI double from catcher Chelsie Tysdal and an RBI single from first baseman Kelly Sarginson to take a 2-0 lead.

The Rebels answered back in the top of the fourth after center fielder Alyssa McGovern blasted a two-run double to left center and scored on a squeeze bunt by Corrine Doornberg to give Ole Miss a 3-2 lead.

Ole Miss added to its lead in the fifth with three more runs on an RBI triple from Cali Overbeck, an RBI single from Aly Presswood and a sac fly from Molly Goza.

McGovern, Overbeck and Presswood all recorded two hits in the game, and McGovern knocked in two runs while Overbeck and Presswood each knocked in one apiece.

Lindsey Perry started the game for Ole Miss and pitched the first 3.1 innings. Perry allowed five hits and two runs while striking out two Lions.

Becky Nye entered with two on and one out in the fourth and retired the next two batters to get the Rebels out of the inning. Nye pitched the final 2.2 innings and suffered the loss. She allowed only two earned runs and struck out two batters.
