2/27/2009 | Men's Tennis

WACO, Texas In a battle of two top 10 teams that went down to the wire, the No. 9 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team lost a tight 4-3 match to No. 10 Baylor at the Baylor Tennis Center Friday.

With the match squared at 3-3, all eyes turned to court one, where 39th-ranked Jonas Berg was battling 10th-ranked Denes Lukacs.  After dropping the first set 6-3 and trailing 5-3 in the second, Berg battled back to take a 6-5 lead.  It would go to a tiebreaker, with Lukacs winning it 7-4 to clinch the match.

This was the Rebels’ (7-2) second outdoor match of the season, after defeating TCU 5-2 on Thursday in Waco.

Ole Miss won a hard fought doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to take a 1-0 lead.   Devin Britton and Tucker Vorster, playing their second match together, walked off the court first with an 8-5 win over Attila Bucko and Marc Bruche at No. 2 doubles. On court one, fourth-ranked Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge and Baylor’s David Galic and Jordan Rux, were locked in a 6-6 tie when the Ole Miss duo broke Rux’s serve.  Then ten Berge held his serve to allow the Rebel tandem to clinch the doubles point.

Baylor (8-3) evened the score when Maros Horny defeated Rebel freshman Marcel Thiemann 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.   They took a 2-1 lead after Dominik Mueller’s 6-1, 6-2 win over 79th-ranked Bram ten Berge on court four.

Junior Kalle Norberg, ranked No. 32 in the nation, tied the match at 2-2 with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over BU’s Julian Bley at No. 3 singles.  Freshman Devin Britton, ranked No. 40, put the Rebels ahead by defeating 38th-ranked Jordan Rux 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The Bears answered when Bucko handed Rebel freshman Otto Sauer a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 loss at No. 5 singles, setting up the final outcome.
