Rebels Drop Season Opener At No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette

Junior All-American Lauren Grill singled off the wall in left to lead off the game, but was thrown out at second base by Vallie Gaspard. It was the Rebels’ only hit in the game.
Louisiana-Lafayette jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back singles from Karli Hubbard and Lana Bowers and a walk by Melissa Verde, Codi Runyan knocked a two-run double to right to stake the Cajuns to a 2-0. The Cajuns added a third run in the inning on a Gaspard fielder’s choice.
The Ragin’ Cajuns added a fourth run in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk by Runyan and another run the in bottom of the third on a fielding error by Rebel shortstop Cali Overbeck.
Sophomore Lindsey Perry (0-1) went the distance for Ole Miss and struck out six batters in 6.0 innings of work. Perry allowed seven hits and seven runs, five of which were earned, while walking four.
Donna Bourgeois (1-0) picked up the win for the Cajuns, allowing one hit over 7.0 innings and striking out 13 batters.
