Rebels Give Back Through Reading In The Community

3/2/2009 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. - Members of the Ole Miss football, soccer and volleyball teams recently took time out to visit three local elementary schools as part of "Reading with the Rebels", in which student-athletes give back to the community through the Ole Miss Rebel Ready program.

A total of 27 Ole Miss athletes read to and interacted with students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades on Feb. 11-12. The schools included Della Davidson Elementary, Upper Lafayette Elementary and Lower Lafayette Elementary.

Some of the Rebels read to whole classes, others led group discussions on books, and some read to students in need of one-on-one support.

Through Rebel Ready, Ole Miss student-athletes stay actively involved in both the Oxford and University communities. In addition to "Reading with the Rebels", student-athletes regularly participate in activities such as visiting patients in area hospitals, being mentors to elementary school students, visiting senior adults for "Jeopardy Night" at local retirement centers, holding several "Meet the Rebels" days throughout the year, and giving numerous talks on subjects such as drug awareness and staying in school to area students.
