Rebel Track and Field Trio Named All-SEC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following outstanding performances last week at the SEC Indoor Championships, three members of the Ole Miss women’s track and field teams were named All-SEC the conference office announced Thursday. 

 

Sophomore Juliana Smith was named to the All-SEC first team after becoming an SEC Indoor Champion in the weight throw.  Smith claimed the individual title in the weight throw to become only the second female in school history to win an SEC Indoor Championship.  Smith joins former Ole Miss great Brittney Reese as the only two females to earn that distinction.

 

Smith won the weight throw with a new school record distance and NCAA provisional mark of 62-03.00 to surpass the previous school record of 60-01.00 she set earlier in the year at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic.

 

Fellow sophomore LaJada Baldwin was named to the All-SEC second team after finishing second in the 400 meters.  Baldwin set a new school record in the 400 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 52.98.  She surpassed the previous school record time of 53.38 she set in the preliminaries. 

 

After taking third place in the 800 meters, freshman Sofie Persson as named to the All-Freshman team.  Persson set a new school record and improved her NCAA provisional time with a mark of 2:05.38.

 

Ole Miss returns to action March 6-7 when the Rebels take part in a pair of last chance meets.  The Rebels will compete in both the Arkansas Last Chance Meet and the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
