Women's Golf To Host Rebel Intercollegiate

4/1/2009 | Women's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. -- Things are changing around the landscape of Ole Miss women’s golf.  One of those changes is the return of a home tournament.

For the first time since 1998, the Rebels will host a tournament.  The Country Club of Oxford is serving as this year’s host to the Rebel Intercollegiate April 3-5.

This will be the first collegiate event hosted at the Country Club of Oxford, which opened in the summer of 2006.  Surrounded by stately hardwoods and gentle rolling hills, the course was designed by Jim Fazio.

The list of teams competing this weekend includes four from the Magnolia State.  Joining Ole Miss will be Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi and Jackson State.  The rest of the field features Oregon State, Missouri, Tulane, UAB, South Alabama, Memphis, Arkansas State, Kennesaw State, Belmont and Murray State.

“We are excited to host the Rebel Intercollegiate,” Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “We would like to thank the Country Club of Oxford and all their staff for allowing us to host the tournament.  They have done a great job of helping us put together an exciting event.”

Fans will have the opportunity to see one of the top golfers in the nation, right here in their own backyard.  Ole Miss senior Dori Carter has been ranked in the Top 25 the entire year.  The Valdosta, Ga., native became the program’s first All-American when she earned honorable mention honors for the 2007-08 season.  The All-SEC first team selection also qualified for the NCAA East Regional in her home state of Georgia.

Last fall, Carter helped lead the Rebels to their first tournament title since 2004, as her runner-up finish propelled the team to the Johnie Imes Invitational.  She also took second at the Mercedes Benz Championship for her fifth career runner-up showing.

Carter is thrilled that she finally gets to showcase her talents as well as her team to the local community.

“It’s so exciting (on hosting),” Carter echoed.  “It’s great for the golf program; because we haven’t been able to have the Oxford community come watch us play.  I’m hoping that it will turn out to be a success obviously for the women’s program, but for golf in general.”

Joining Carter on the links this weekend will be junior Sara Grantham, senior J.J. Flynn, and freshmen Ashley Lance and Haley Millsap.  The rest of the team will compete as individuals.

With four top-five finishes on the year, the Rebels are ranked 35th in the country.  They are hoping to make a strong push in their final two tournaments and qualify for NCAA Regionals.

Admission to the tournament is free.   Each day will consist of 18 holes.  The Rebels will tee of Friday’s round beginning at 9:08 a.m.  For more information on the tournament go to www.OleMissSports.com and click on the tournament logo on the women’s golf page.
