Ole Miss Drops A Pair To No. 7 Georgia

4/11/2009 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. Georgia scored five runs in the first inning, as the No. 7 nationally-ranked Bulldogs knocked off Ole Miss 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at the UGA Softball Stadium.

Georgia took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run homer to left by designated player Tori Moody and a two-run single up the middle by first baseman Brianna Hesson. The Bulldogs were aided in the inning by two walks and a hit by pitch from Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry.

That would be all the runs UGA would need, as the Rebels out hit Georgia 5-4, but stranded eight runners in the game.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth with a sac fly to left by third baseman Alisa Goler.

Ole Miss threatened in the first after Lauren Grill walked to lead off the game and moved to third on Courtnie Ghinaudo’s bunt single and a throwing error by Goler. However, the Rebels failed to score, as Grill was thrown out at home trying to score on a ground ball and Lisa Conchos and Amber Tramp both popped out on the infield.

The Rebels had runners on first and second with two outs in the forth on a single by designated player Amanda Hutcheson and another walk by Grill. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, but Ole Miss couldn’t push a run across, as Ghinaudo grounded out to third to end the inning.

Hutcheson and freshman Corrine Doornberg knocked back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh to put two runners on with one out. Both runners moved up on fly out by Grill, but pinch-hitter Cali Overbeck popped out to the pitcher to end the game.

Perry suffered the loss after pitching 1.0 inning. She gave up five runs on three hits. Becky Nye entered in the second and pitched the final 5.0 innings. She allowed only one hit and one run, while striking out three.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Ridgeland, Miss. to face instate foe Southern Miss on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Jacksonville State on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Game Two

Georgia third baseman Alisa Golar knocked in three runs on a double and a home run to help lead the No. 7 Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over the Ole Miss Rebels in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at UGA Softball Stadium.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first on center fielder Taylor Schlopy’s lead off home run off the scoreboard in left.

The Rebels answered back to take a 2-1 in the third on third baseman Ashley Dowdy’s two-out single to right that scored Amanda Hutcheson and Lisa Conchos. Conchos set up the two-run single with a double to right center that moved Hutcheson to third. Hutcheson had reached earlier on the inning on a fielder’s choice.

Dowdy finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Hutcheson picked up two hits in four at-bats and scored once.

The Bulldogs tied the game at two in the third on Goler’s RBI double to right center that scored Schlopy.

Goler’s two-run homer in fifth gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Left fielder Lauren Grill walked to lead off the game, but was erased on an Amanda Hutcheson fielder’s choice. Hutcheson moved to third after Conchos’ ground ball was booted by UGA second baseman Ashley Pauly, giving the Rebels runners on first and third with one down. Conchos stole second, but she and Hutcheson were left stranded, as Dowdy struck out swinging and first baseman Molly Goza grounded out to the pitcher.

Grill finished the game with two walks and was walked seven times in the series.

Becky Nye took the loss after pitching 6.0 innings in a complete-game effort. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two.
