Rebels Face Golden Eagles, Gamecocks This Week

4/13/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - After playing 18 straight games against Southeastern Conference opponents, the Ole Miss Rebels will step out of league play to take on instate foe Southern Miss and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a pair of non-conference games this week.

The Rebels will travel to Ridgeland, Miss. on Tuesday to face the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss in a neutral-site affair. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland. Ole Miss will then return home to face off against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a single game scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The game between the Rebels and the Gamecocks is a make-up contest from a previously scheduled game that was rained out on March 11. Admission is free for Wednesday’s tilt with the Gamecocks.

The Rebels (17-23, 5-17 SEC) are lead by junior All-American Lauren Grill, who has 10 home runs this season. Grill’s 36 career homer are second all time in school history and sit just 13 behind DeDe Justice’s mark of 49. Freshman Corrine Doornberg continues to lead the team with a .311 batting average. In the circle, junior Becky Nye has won a team-high 12 games, while striking out 108 batters in 183.1 innings.

"We didn’t play as well as we would have like last weekend against Georgia, so we need to use these games to get back to how we are capable of playing,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson.

Ole Miss and Southern Miss are tied at nine games apiece in the all-time series and the Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings. Tuesday’s game in Ridgeland will be the first neutral-site game between the two state schools. Southern Miss enters the matchup with a 19-20-1 overall mark and are led by junior Megan Hill, who is batting a team-best .430 with nine home runs on the season.

The Rebels’ series with Jacksonville State is also tied at one game apiece. Ole Miss won last year’s meeting 2-1 in Oxford. The Gamecocks are currently 26-9 on the season and are 11-1 in the Ohio Valley. They are led junior Nikki Preir, who is batting a team-high .466 with nine homers and 40 RBI. As a team, Jacksonville State is batting .318 on the year.
