Ole Miss Falls To Jacksonville State

4/15/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Freshman Corrine Doornberg led the Rebels with two hits at four at-bats, but it wasn’t enough as Jacksonville State knocked off Ole Miss 5-1 on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI bloop single from catcher Amber Tramp. The base knock scored Courtnie Ghinaudo, who had reached on an infield single to start in the inning and moved second on a passed ball with one down.

Jacksonville State tied the game at one in the top of the third with a solo home run to right from first baseman Nikki Prier.

Designated player Meredith Sellers knocked a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole in the top of the fourth that gave the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead.

Jacksonville State broke the game open in the fifth after scoring three runs on just three hits, but the Gamecocks were aided by two Rebel errors in the frame. Shortstop Mary Beth Ledbetter and center fielder Hillary Downs opened the inning with back-to-back singles before left fielder Chrissy O’Neal walked to load the bases. Lindsey Perry, who entered in relief of starting pitcher Becky Nye, struck out Prier swinging for the first out, but gave up an RBI single to catcher Allie Barker. Downs scored later in the frame on a throwing error by Rebel catcher Amber Tramp. The Gamecocks added a final run in the inning on a fielding error by shortstop Lauren Grill.

Ole Miss threatened in the bottom of the fifth after a pair of walks by Tramp and Grill and a single from Doornberg loaded the bases with two out. However, Gamecock starting pitcher Karla Pittman got third baseman Ashley Dowdy to ground out to second to end the inning.

Doornberg finished the day 2-for-4 with two singles, while Grill singled in two at-bats and walked once.

Nye suffered the loss after pitching the first 4.0 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Perry entered the game in the fifth and pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs and striking out four.

Ole Miss will continue its six-game homestead this weekend, as the Rebels welcome SEC foe Tennessee for a three-game series in Oxford. The Rebels and the Lady Vols will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Sunday is Senior Day, as a pair of Rebels Lisa Conchos and Michelle May will be honored before the 1 p.m. game
