Women's Golf Earns Best SEC Finish Since 1999

4/19/2009 | Women's Golf

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. The Ole Miss women’s golf team earned its best finish since 1999 at the SEC Championship, carding a final round 291 to take seventh at the Cobblestone Park Golf Club.

The SEC currently boasts six teams in the top 25 and 10 teams in the top 40.  It’s very possible that 11 teams will make NCAA Regionals.

The Rebels steadily improved during the championship.  After shooting an opening round of 301, they came back with a 298 on Saturday and then Sunday’s 291 for a total of 890.

Senior Dori Carter and freshman Ashley Lance both tied for 17th with a 221.  Carter earned her eighth top 20 finish in nine tournaments this year.  Lance equaled her best finish as a Rebel with her third top 20 showing.  In the first round she carded a 1-under 70, tying her low round of the year.

Junior Sara Grantham shot a 72 in the final round and moved up to a tie for 29th at 225.  Sophomore Jillian Brodd had the low round of the day for the Rebels, posting an even par 71. She tied for 36th at 228.   Freshman Haley Millsap rounded out the Rebels with a 230.

"We played great down the stretch today including three birdies on our 18th hole," head coach Michele Drinkard said.  "Everyone stepped up starting with Jillian's even par round.  Haley wins the biggest heart award today playing through back pain that would have had a normal person withdrawing from the round.

"Sara struck the ball really well today, but the best part of her game was her new belly putter.  Ashley played with much more confidence just like she did in her first round. Dori didn't score as well as she would have liked but battled all day and finally birdied her last hole to another nice roar of the crowd."

Auburn won the tournament with an 870, eight strokes clear of Arkansas and Alabama, who tied for second at 878.  Tennessee claimed fourth at 881 and LSU finished fifth at 886.  Marta Silva of Georgia captured individual medalist honors with a 210.

"I am proud of all nine team members for taking the challenge that was issued back during our first team meeting of stepping their game up and pushing each other passed their max," Drinkard added.  "Alexis and I are really proud of what the team has accomplished this year and all the goals they have checked off their list.  Our next stop is NCAA Regionals."

The NCAA Regional selections will be announced Monday, April 27.
