Track And Field Signs Two Of Nation's Top Jumpers

4/21/2009 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss track and field head coach Joe Walker announced Tuesday that high school jumpers Ricky Robertson and Marci Morman have signed national letters of intent to join the Rebels next season.

A native of Hernando, Miss., by way of Hernando High School, Robertson is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the high jump following his personal best mark of 7-03.00.  His leap set a new state high jump record among Mississippi high schoolers, surpassing the previous state record of 7-02.00 set by Johnny Walker of Port Gibson High School in 1991.

Ironically, Robertson set his state record while in Oxford competing at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Division 2-4A meet at Oxford High School last season.

“Ricky is an outstanding high jumper who has high school marks that would already be competitive right now in the SEC,” Walker said.  “We are very excited about Ricky because we feel like he has an outstanding future at Ole Miss.”

Marci Morman, a long jumper from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., is also slated to join the track and field team next season.  Morman owns a personal best distance of 19-11.00 and is ranked 14th in the nation among female high school long jumpers.

“Marci is another athlete we are thrilled about because we think she has the ability to do big things at Ole Miss,” Walker said.  “She has one of the best long jump marks this year, and we believe she will continue the tradition of great jumpers that has become customary to Ole Miss.”

“Not only are we excited about added two of the better athletes in the United States, but we couldn’t be happier that both of them are local to the Ole Miss program and decided to become Rebels,” Walker added.
