Ole Miss Falls To Jacksonville State

4/23/2009 | Softball

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. Gamecock center fielder Hillary Downs hit an opposite field walk-off solo home run to lead Jacksonville State to a 4-3 win over the Ole Miss Rebels on Thursday afternoon at University Field.

Downs’ solo shot to left helped the Gamecocks (32-9) overcome four errors and erased a 3-0 Ole Miss lead. Downs finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI.

Catcher Amber Tramp singled to lead off the top of the second, and Alise Doubt and Aly Presswood both reached on fielding errors to load the bases for Ole Miss. Tramp was thrown out at home by the shortstop on a fielder’s choice for the first out, but left fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo hit a sac fly to right to score Doubt and give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville State shortstop Mary Beth Ledbetter reached on a fielding error by shortstop Cali Overbeck to start the bottom of the second, but was erased after Downs grounded into a fielder’s choice. Downs then stole second with two outs and moved to third on passed ball on a Nikki Prier walk to give the Gamecocks runners on the corners. However, Rebel starting pitcher Becky Nye settled in and struck out catcher Allie Barker to stand the runners.

Ole Miss (22-26) added another run in the fourth after first baseman Molly Goza reached on a throwing error by Ledbetter with one out and later scored on a second Ledbetter error to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

Third baseman Ashley Dowdy added to the Ole Miss lead with a one-out, RBI single to center in the fifth that extended the Rebels advantage to 3-0. Dowdy’s base knock scored freshman Corrine Doornberg, who had reached on an infield single to start the frame. Dowdy finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI single, while Doornberg singled, stole a base and scored once.

Jacksonville State tied the game in the fifth on back-to-back home runs from Downs and left fielder Chrissy O’Neal. Right fielder Jackie Jarman singled to right to lead off the inning, but was erased on a fielder’s choice. Downs then came to the plate and hit a two-run homer to right to bring the Gamecocks to within one. O’Neal followed Down’s blast with a line drive home run that just cleared the fence in right center to tied the game at three.

Nye suffered the complete-game loss after pitching 6.1 innings. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six batters.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Ruston, La. on Wednesday to face Louisiana Tech for the final non-conference match up of the season. The Rebels and the Bulldogs will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
