Ole Miss Splits A Pair With Louisiana Tech
4/30/2009 | Softball
RUSTON, La. - Trailing the entire game and down one run entering the seventh, Ole Miss mounted a furious comeback capped by Senior Lisa Conchos’ two-run game winning single in the top of the seventh to give the Rebels (23-27) a 5-4 win over Louisiana Tech (30-20) in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Lady Techster Softball Field. LA Tech took the second game 9-1 to earn the mid-week split.
First baseman Aly Presswood walked with one out in the top of the seventh and was followed by a pair of infield singles from Corrine Doornberg and Courtnie Ghinaudo to load the bases for Ole Miss. Conchos then ripped her single up the middle past a diving shortstop to score Presswood and Doornberg and give the Rebels their first lead of the game.
Junior Becky Nye sat down LA Teach 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win for Ole Miss. Nye pitched a complete game and allowed four runs on three hits and struck out four for her 15th win of the season.
The game had a 39-minute delay in the top of the seventh after home plate umpire Jena Tidwell was struck on the wrist by a pitch and had to leave the game, which continued with just two umpires.
LA Tech took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after first baseman Kylie Bassett smashed a three-run home run to left with one down in the frame. After that homer in the first, Nye retired 11-of-the-next-12 batters and allowed only one hit - a single - the rest of the game.
Ole Miss pounded out 11 hits in the game, but couldn’t seem to plate a run in the early frames. The Rebels loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first on an infield single from Ghinaudo, a single to left by
Presswood singled to start the top of the fifth and was pinch ran for by Alyssa McGovern. Designated player Corrine Doornberg then laid down a sac bunt, but after a close play at first McGovern took third. However, with only one out Ghinaudo lined out sharply to short and McGovern was put out at third to end the inning.
The Rebels finally jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth after third baseman Ashley Dowdy singled over the second baseman’s head to lead off the inning and stole second with two outs. Freshman Amanda Hutcheson singled to left to move Dowdy to third and center fielder Alise Doubt reached on an infield single to score Dowdy and pull the Rebels to within 3-1.
The Lady Techsters added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth after shortstop Amberly Waits singled off the wall in right center to knock in center fielder Emma Barnes and give LA Tech a 4-1 lead. The damage in the inning could have been greater if Waits hadn’t passed left fielder Danny Sheridan rounding first causing
Overbeck answered back for the Rebels in the sixth with a two-run homer down the line in left to pull Ole Miss to with one run. It was Overbeck’s first home run of her career and scored Tramp, who was hit by a pitch with two down in the inning. She finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI.
