Rebels Take Two From Bears

4/23/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. -  Catcher Amber Tramp and senior Lisa Conchos both smashed two-run homers and the Rebels pounded out 12 hits to knock off Central Arkansas 8-1 in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Ole Miss swept both games on the day, as the Rebels took game one 3-2.

Tramp, a Keller, Texas native, knocked UCA starting pitcher Holli Hill’s second pitch in the second inning deep over the wall in left center to score Aly Presswood and give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead. Courtnie Ghinaudo added an RBI single later in the inning that extended the Rebel lead to 3-1.

“We played pretty well and were able to get a couple of victories,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “We got some big hits today and we just need to keep this momentum going.”

Central Arkansas jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle by center fielder Sarah Garcia. The Bears had the bases loaded with two outs, but Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry got left fielder Kasey Britt to ground out to second to end the inning.

The Bears loaded the bases again the fifth with one out on a double to right center by Britt and a pair of hit by pitches, but Perry retired Paige Brock on a pop out and catcher Rachel Baucom was called out on runners’ interference to leave the bases loaded.

Conchos blasted her two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Ole Miss lead to 5-1. It was Conchos’ fourth home run of the year and second in three games and knocked in Ghinaudo, who had singled to start the frame.

Ole Miss added to its lead again in the sixth after Corrine Doornberg knocked an RBI single up the middle and Conchos smashed a two-run single through the right side to give the Rebels an 8-1 advantage.

Conchos tied a career high with three hits in four at-bats and drove in four runs, while Ghinaudo set a new career best with her three base hits and tied a career high with two runs scored. Doornberg added two hits and an RBI in four at-bats and scored a run.

Perry picked up the win after pitching a complete game and striking out two in 7.0 innings of work. She allowed only one unearned run on five hits.

Ole Miss will travel to Jacksonville, Ala. tomorrow for a single game against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at 4 p.m.

Game One

Freshmen Corrine Doornberg and Cali Overbeck each went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to help lead the Ole Miss Rebels to 3-2 victory over Central Arkansas in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a pair of RBI singles from first baseman Kayla Hitchcock and designated player Katie McGregor. Central Arkansas had a runner on second with two outs, but Ole Miss starting pitcher Kelly Chandler got right fielder Luisa Escobar to pop out to short to end the inning.

The Rebels battled back in the bottom of the third, as freshman Amanda Hutcheson singled to left and later scored on Doornberg’s first career triple to pull Ole Miss to within one of Central Arkansas.

Ole Miss added a second run in the fourth after Lisa Conchos singled down the line in left and later scored on an Overbeck single up the middle. Conchos finished the game with one hit in three at-bats and scored once, while Hutcheson singled in two at-bats and also scored once.

Designated player Aly Presswood came to the plate with the scored tied at two in the bottom of the fifth and smashed a double down the line left to score Doornberg for the Rebels’ winning run.

Chandler picked up the victory for the Ole Miss after pitching 7.0 innings and allowing two runs and only three hits. It was the freshman’s second win of the season and second complete game of her career. She stuck out four and only issued one walk.
