Rebel Golf To Host Reunion Intercollegiate

4/5/2009 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. -- Golf fans in Mississippi will have the opportunity to see some of the top names in college golf as the Ole Miss men’s golf team hosts the second annual Reunion Intercollegiate April 6-7 at Reunion Golf and Country Club.

The 15-team field includes four teams from the Magnolia State. Joining Ole Miss will be Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi and Jackson State.  The rest of the field features SEC teams Arkansas, Auburn, LSU and Vanderbilt.

“I have been looking forward to this tournament at Reunion all spring,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “As a program, we are fortunate to be able to host a great collegiate event at such an outstanding course.  The field is stronger this year and is headlined by six SEC schools.

“I have challenged our players to play with a tough’ mentality this week.  We are expecting some cold, windy weather the first round, and sometimes the team with the

best attitude wins in these situations.”

Ole Miss boasts the fifth ranked freshmen class in the nation according to Golfstat.  Freshmen Sean Dale and Joe David have made a significant impact in their first year with the Rebels.   David leads the team with a 72.31 stroke average, and Dale is right behind at 72.74. Both have finished second in a tournament this year and have combined for three top-five, six top-10 and 11 top-20 finishes.

Youth is definitely carrying the Rebels this season with sophomore Jonathan Randolph, a native of Brandon, third on the team with a 72.85 stroke average.  The local product just missed out on taking medalist honors here last year, finishing second with a 209.  In the Rebels’ last tournament (Schenkel E-Z-Go), Randolph carded a final round 69 with seven birdies to take third place.

Joining these three at Reunion, will be junior Will Roebuck and redshirt freshman Billy Brozovich, a native of Greenville, Miss.

“The Ole Miss players want to do their best in front of our many fans,” Ross added.   “The Jackson metro area is home to a large contingent of Ole Miss fans, and our team wants to prove we are a contender for the SEC and NCAA Championships.   As we get closer to these end-of-year championships, we hope our team will begin to play at its highest level.”

Reunion Country Club has hosted several top events since opening in 2004.  The Bob Cupp design has hosted the 2007 State Amateur Championship, the 2007 U.S. Amateur Qualifier and the 2006 U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier.

The first day (April 6) of play will consist of 36 holes, followed by the final round of 18 Tuesday, April 7.  Admission is free.
