Women's Golf Concludes Season At NCAA East Regional

5/10/2009 | Women's Golf

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Ole Miss women’s golf team concluded its best season in several years Saturday, finishing tied for 17th place at the NCAA East Regional with a 307-293-309909 at the Mark Bostick Course.

Denver carded the low round (279) of the tournament in the final round for a total of 862 to win the regional by four over Alabama who finished at 866.  Tennessee took third at 873, Virginia finished fourth at 874 and Tulane rounded out the top five at 876.  Duke, North Carolina and Georgia were the three remaining teams to advance to the finals at Caves Valley in Owing Mills, Md.

“It was a tough day for us,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “I am proud of the team for making it to NCAA Regionals.   We gained a lot of positives that we can use to build on for next year as we look to make it back and advance to finals.”

This marked the Rebels first NCAA appearance since 2004 and their fifth overall.  They have enjoyed a successful season which included winning the program’s first tournament title (Jonie Imes) since 2004 and five top-five finishes.

Senior Dori Carter completed her illustrious career, tying for 40th with a 75-73-75223.  The Valdosta, Ga., native earned All-SEC first team honors for the second year in a row this year, and won the Rebel Intercollegiate for her first tournament title.  She leaves as the first ever All-American in the program, having earned that honor in 2008.

“We owe a lot to Dori,” Drinkard said.  “What a great career she’s had.  She has given a lot to the program and helped us reach a lot of goals this year.  We will certainly miss her, but we wish her well in her future endeavors.”

Freshman Haley Millsap finished with a 76-69-80225, junior Sara Grantham turned in a 76-77-79232, sophomore Jillian Brodd had an 80-74-79233, and freshman Ashley Lance carded an 81-80-76237 to complete the Rebel scoring.

All four will return next year, and the Rebels will add incoming freshman standout Haley Sanders of Rogers, Ark., along with two other newcomers.
