NCAA Announces Time Change For Rebels' Match Against UCLA

5/15/2009 | Men's Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas   The NCAA has announced a time change for the No. 2 seeded Ole Miss men’s tennis team’s quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded UCLA on Saturday. Due to impending weather, the match will now begin at 4 p.m. instead of the regularly scheduled time of 5 p.m.

The Rebels defeated the host team, Texas A&M, 4-1 Friday night in the round of 16 in front of 1,136 fans at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

For the third straight big match, the Rebels were led by the freshmen.  After Ole Miss claimed a tight doubles point against A&M, freshman Otto Sauer was first off the court in singles, followed by Marcel Thiemann, both in straight sets.

With the Rebels leading 3-1 overall and ahead on the three remaining courts, this year’s ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year, Devin Britton, finished off a comeback win over his former roommate at Bollettieri Academy, Austin Krajicek, to clinch the victory.   Britton has now clinched the SEC Tournament Championship, last week’s second round win over LSU and this one.

The freshmen are now 27-1 in singles and doubles since the SEC Tournament.  Britton has won seven in a row at No. 2 singles, and Marcel Thiemann has won nine in a row.  In doubles, Britton and Tucker Vorster have won six in a row, and Sauer and Kalle Norberg have won seven in a row.

UCLA downed Miami 4-1 to advance.  The last time the two teams faced other in the NCAA Championships, UCLA won 4-2 in the semifinals in 2005, also in College Station.

“I thought at the beginning of the year, that UCLA was the most talented team,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “From watching them their last matches, I think that’s true.  They know that they have a team that can win the championship, and we’re going to have to bring our A’ game and be at our best to have a chance against them.”

UCLA (20-4) is led by 64th-ranked Matt Brooklyn at No.1 singles.  The Bruins have reached at least the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament every since the team format was adopted in 1977 (33 years in a row).
