OXFORD, Miss. When the Southeastern Conference holds its annual meeting at the Sandestin Beach Hilton in Destin, Fla., May 25-28, Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone, who currently serves as chairman of the SEC athletics directors committee, is preparing to address a full agenda of topics. Boone has been serving as committee chairman since August of 2008 when he was elected to succeed long-time chair Larry Templeton of Mississippi State, who was retiring as athletics director. The annual meeting brings together the president/chancellor, athletics director, faculty athletic representative, head football coach, head men's basketball coach, head women's basketball coach, senior woman administrator and sports information director from each school, as well as various media and bowl representatives. "This meeting will cover things like legislative proposals related to the SEC Commissioner's Regulations, SEC Bylaws and those legislative proposals the SEC membership will consider sponsoring during the 2009-2010 NCAA legislative cycle," Boone said. Boone's committee will convene Monday afternoon, with the general meeting schedule set to begin Tuesday morning. "The athletics directors will meet all day Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday afternoon if needed, before meeting with the presidents and chancellors Friday morning," he said. "The different groups will have simultaneous meetings with SEC Commissioner Mike Slive and then jointly with the athletics directors and the commissioner on any issues they have identified. "The head coaches attending the Destin meetings will also review those proposals related to their sport," Boone added. "During the group meetings, there will be the opportunity to fully discuss these proposals and to amend proposals if deemed necessary." Some of the agenda items include receiving financial reports, receiving an update on television partnerships with CBS and ESPN, getting an update and presentation by XOS on a digital network, hearing academic updates and status of SEC schools and getting reports from SEC representatives on NCAA committees and from officiating coordinators. The meeting will also include a report on football bowl partnerships and future opportunities as well as a review of football and basketball championship games. One of the highlights of the annual meeting is Thursday night's Awards Banquet. Ole Miss men's tennis player Bram ten Berge and University of Tennessee swimmer Christine Magnuson will receive the 2008-09 H. Boyd McWhorter Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award The two were chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the SEC universities. Both will receive a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by AT&T, an SEC Corporate Champion sponsor and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "Ole Miss is very fortunate having Bram representing our great institution," Boone said. "Seldom can an individual excel in athletics and academics at such a lofty level. Congratulations to Bram for this achievement and to Coach Billy Chadwick for providing such a supportive environment." Previous Ole Miss winners of the prestigious H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award include Jeff Noblin in 1987, Danny Hoskins in 1988 and Rob Robertson in 2005.
