Five Rebels Qualify For NCAA Championships At MidEast Regional

Along with the five individual automatic qualifiers, both the men’s and women’s team finished in the top-12 of the meet. The men’s team took seventh place out of 42 teams with a total of 34 points, while the women’s team placed 12th out of 39 teams with 21 points. “We had an outstanding meet against some of the top teams in the country,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker said. “There were around 80 teams here this weekend and to come out and place like we did says a lot about how well our team competed.” Derek McGuire automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put after placing second with a school record distance of 59-10.25. He surpassed the previous school record of 59-04.25 he set earlier in the year at the Mississippi Open. Colin Moleton took third place in the javelin throw with a school record distance of 226-00.00 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. His mark broke the previous school record of 211-11.00 he set earlier in the year at the Ole Miss Invitational. Fellow junior Bryce Willen finished sixth in the event with a mark of 220-02.00 to record the second furthest distance in school history. In the triple jump, senior Wale Odetunde posted his best mark of the season and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships following a fifth place finish with a distance of 52-06.50. Sophomore Lee Ellis Moore also earned a spot in the NCAA Championships as he took second place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 50.45. Freshman Carson Blanks tallied two points for the Rebels by placing seventh with a time of 51.66. The Rebel 4x400 meter relay team of Michael Coleman, Matt Daniels, Christopher Bush and Moore collected two points for Ole Miss after finishing in sixth place with a time of 3:07.62. LaJada Baldwin finished in first place for the women’s team in the 400 meters to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships after setting a new facility record with a time of 51.99. Sophomore Sofie Persson scored two points for the Rebels after finishing sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.72. The Ole Miss 4x100 meter relay team comprised of Kadeshia Fortune, Baldwin, Dacus and Kristin Bridges placed seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 45.74 to reach the finals. With Rachel Jenkins running the final leg in place of an injured Bridges, the Rebels finished in sixth place in the finals with a time of 46.16 to record two points. The 4x400 meter relay team of Jasmine Dacus, Persson, Britney Barnard and Baldwin picked up five points after taking fourth with a time of 3:34.69 to post the second fastest time in school history. Ole Miss returns to action June 10-13 when the Rebels’ automatic qualifiers and at-large selections take part in the NCAA Championships from AGATE MEN 100 Meter Prelims 24.
