Athletics To Be Well Represented At Graduation Saturday
5/7/2009 | Athletics
OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss athletics will be well represented at Saturday's graduation ceremonies on the University of Mississippi campus.
Forty-nine Ole Miss student-athletes are set to earn degrees this semester, while two more are on track to complete their curriculum in August. In addition, 11 Rebels already earned bachelor's degrees in December of this academic year.
A note of particular pride for the athletics department is the fact that Rebel student-athletes' graduation rates have exceeded those of the general student population over the past few years.
Among the student-athletes earning their degrees is men's tennis All-American Bram ten Berge, who is this year's male recipient of the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The Maarssen, Netherlands, native has a 3.97 grade point average, majoring in Classics, with a minor in German. He was the 2006 SEC Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Part of the nation's No. 1-ranked doubles team, he has made the Chancellor's Honor Roll every semester at Ole Miss and is a four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete recipient.
Also graduating is recent NFL free agent signee Jason Cook (Baltimore Ravens), who received a bachelor's in African-American studies to go along with the bachelor's in English he earned last May.
The University of Mississippi's 156th commencement ceremonies begin Saturday at 9 a.m. in The Grove with veteran newsman Bob Schieffer delivering the address. The individual schools' graduation exercises will follow in various locations across campus.
