Rebel Golfers Make Championship Flight At Southern Am

6/1/2009 | Women's Golf

ALBANY, Ga. Two current members of the Ole Miss women’s golf team and one incoming freshman, made the championship flight at the 94th Women’s Golf Southern Amateur Championships Monday at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.

Rising senior Sara Grantham (Wilsonville, Ala.), who qualified for the U.S. Public Links last week, advanced to the championship flight with a 73.  She will be joined by Haley Millsap (Pace, Fla.), who just completed her freshman year for the Rebels. Millsap shot a 76 and chipped in a 40-footer on the second playoff hole to earn a spot in the championship flight (low 32).

Incoming freshman standout Haley Sanders (Rogers, Ark.) also fired a 73 to make the championship flight.   Another future Rebel, Kathryn Fowler (Americus, Ga.) qualified for the first flight.  Fowler, who will arrive in the fall with Sanders, is a member of Stonebridge.

“It was fun to be purely a spectator today and watch the four compete,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.   “The Southern Amateur is considered the first of the major amateur tournaments this summer.  One of our team goals this summer is to compete in as many major amateur tournaments as possible, so to start with three players in the championship is awesome.”

The Women’s Southern Golf Association is comprised of the 15 southern states plus the District of Columbia.  The amateur is held each year in late spring.

Match play begins Tuesday and concludes with the 36-hole final on Friday.
