Henson, Smith, Basham Taken In Final Day Of MLB Draft

With the selection of the three players on Thursday, the Rebels had a total of 10 players taken in the 2009 MLB Draft Scott Bittle (4th round St. Louis), Nathan Baker (5th round Pittsburgh), Jordan Henry (7th round Cleveland), Brett Bukvich (18th round Florida), Phillip Irwin (21st round Pittsburgh), Evan Button (22nd round Arizona) and Aaron Barrett (27th round Texas). Henson was selected in the 39th round by the San Francisco Giants, while Smith was taken in the 49th round by the Houston Astros and Basham was drafted in the 50th round by the San Diego Padres. Henson split time at catcher this season with Basham as the senior hit .338 for the year and tied with Smith for the team lead in home runs with eight on the season. He also tallied 34 RBI with 12 doubles as he posted a .576 slugging percentage. Smith was taken in the 49th round by the Houston Astros after being a big part of the Rebels lineup this season, hitting in the meat of the order. The redshirt sophomore hit .336 on the year with seven home runs tied for most on the team with Henson while driving in a team-high 59 RBI on the season. His 78 hits on the year was second on the team and he came up with 15 doubles and two triples to go along with the eight home runs.
