Nine Track And Field Rebels To Compete At NCAA Championships

OXFORD, Miss. Nine members of the Ole Miss track and field team have been selected to compete in eight different events at the NCAA Championships scheduled to be held June 10-13 at the University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field. 

 

Five Rebels were automatic qualifiers in their respective events after finishing in the top-5 at the MidEast Regional, while the remaining four earned at-large bids. 

 

The men’s team will feature four competitors in field events and one in running events.  Sophomore Lee Ellis Moore will take part in the 400 meter hurdles.  Moore automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships by placing second at the MidEast Regional with a time of 50.45.  He currently ranks seventh in the nation. 

 

Senior jumper Wale Odetunde punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships after placing fifth in the triple jump at the MidEast Regional.  He recorded a season-best distance of 52-06.50 and now ranks 12th in the nation. 

 

Derek McGuire recorded a new school record and turned in a second place finish in the shot put at the MidEast Regional to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.  He posted a distance of 59-10.25 to surpass the previous school record of 59-04.25 he set earlier in the year.  McGuire enters the week ranked 22nd in the nation. 

 

Both Colin Moleton and Bryce Willen will each compete in the javelin throw.  Moleton automatically qualified by taking third place at the MidEast Regional with a mark of 226-00.00.  His distance was a new school record and surpassed the previous record of 211-11.00 he set earlier in the year.  Willen earned an at-large bid and owns a personal best distance of 220-02.00, which is the second best distance in school history. 

 

On the women’s side, sophomore LaJada Baldwin automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships by winning the 400 meters at the MidEast Regional.  Baldwin owns a personal best time of 51.95 and ranks seventh in the nation.  She will also compete in the 4x400 meter relay. 

 

Middle distance runner Britney Barnard received an at-large bid in the 800 meters.  Barnard has a personal best time of 2:07.36 and ranks 46th in the nation.  Barnard will also participate in the 4x400 meter relay. 

 

Sofie Persson will compete in the 400 meter hurdles after earning an at-large berth.  Persson boasts a personal best time of 57.96 and ranks 13th in the country.  Persson will also take part in the 4x400 meter relay. 

 

Junior Jasmine Dacus will round out the quartet that will compete in the 4x400 meter relay team.  The Rebels set the second fastest mark in school history over the weekend at the MidEast Regional with a time of 3:34.69 and now rank 10th in the nation.
