OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss rising senior Sara Grantham begins play in the prestigious U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Monday at the Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.
Grantham, who finished second on the team in stroke average this past year, qualified for the U.S. Public Links by tying for medalist honors at the sectional qualifying in Covington, Ga., on May 27.
The championship begins Monday with stroke play qualifying. After Tuesday's final round of stroke play, the top 64 will advance to Match Play. The championship concludes Saturday, June 27 with the 36-hole Match Play final. Grantham will tee off Monday at 12:50 p.m. CT.
"It's neat to be here," said Grantham following Sunday's championship dinner. "It's a little different feel (than a regular amateur tournament), because everything is a little nicer. As far as the course, it is set up well. It's in great shape. It features bent grass, which is different than I am used to playing on. There is lots of tricky rough. I am just going to go out there and try and hit a lot of fairways and greens and take it one shot at a time."
Grantham who played a practice round on Sunday with a girl from Hawaii, has had the opportunity to meet a lot of different people from around the country.
"There are a lot of really great players here," she said. "I've met people from Alaska to California to Wisconsin." In fact, her threesome on Monday includes players from Wisconsin and California.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
