Rebels Shine At USA Track And Field Championships

6/29/2009 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. The Ole Miss track and field team earned seven top-15 finishes over the course of the weekend at both the USA Track and Field Championships and the USA Junior Track and Field Championships from Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Rebel sophomore hurdler Lee Ellis Moore came just inches of reaching the finals of the 400 meter hurdles, but fell just short after posting a time of 50.65 in the semifinals Saturday evening.

Moore advanced to the semifinals in the 400 meter hurdles after finishing 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 50.77, while competing against many of the best professional and amateur athletes in the United States.

LaJada Baldwin took part in the 400 meters and finished in 20th place with a time of 54.64 amongst some of the best professional and amateur athletes in the United States.

In field events, Wale Odetunde leaped a distance of 49-10.00 on his way to a 14th place finish in the triple jump.

Former Ole Miss All-American Brittney Reese, who would have been a senior for the Rebels this season had she not signed a professional contract, won the long jump with a new personal best mark of 23-03.25.

In the USA Junior Track and Field Championships, Rebel freshman Brian Knight finished fourth in the high jump with a jump of 7-0.50.  That mark eclipses his previous best of 6-10.75 and places him second on the all-time Ole Miss list.

Knight also turned in a fourth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 50-06.25.

Ole Miss signee Ricky Robertson (Hernando, Miss.) won the event with a jump of 7-01.75.  He is the No. 1 ranked high jumper in the nation and state high school champion.

Freshman Caleb Lee turned in a fifth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 24-09.75.  Lee also finished in seventh place in the triple jump with a distance of 49-05.75.

On the women’s side, Aria Gaines posted a ninth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 39-10.75.
