6/5/2009 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. - Jeff Ulmer, who has served as president of the UMAA Foundation since October of 2008, has resigned due to family considerations in order to accept a position closer to home. Ulmer, whose resignation at Ole Miss is effective June 26, has accepted a position as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
"Jeff Ulmer is an experienced fund raiser," said Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone. "His organizational skills and processes brought a much-needed professional approach to our UMAA Foundation in the area of major gifts. We hate to lose him, but family always comes first and we support his decision. UCF is getting a very good person.
"The UMAA Foundation will undergo an immediate national search for another seasoned major gifts professional to lead our organization. This is a very attractive opportunity and we anticipate a lot of interest."
Boone will serve as interim president during the transition period.
"Over the past several months I have been dealing with a serious illness in my family along with the challenges of traveling to and from Florida to be with them," Ulmer said. "As a result, I have had to make some very difficult decisions about my future at Ole Miss. Our athletics director, Pete Boone, and my colleagues have been extremely supportive and helpful throughout the past several months, and I am truly grateful for all they have done for me.
"Regretfully, I have decided that it is in my family's best interest that I resign as president of the UMAA Foundation to be closer to home. I will always be an Ole Miss Rebel and I am extremely grateful to all of our donors and fans for making my stay at Ole Miss memorable."
Ulmer, who brought more than 20 years of institutional advancement experience to Ole Miss, began his development career in 1989 at his alma mater, the University of Florida, where he served four colleges and participated in two capital campaigns over a 15-year period. He started as the Associate Director of Development for UF's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, moving on to become the Associate Director of Development for UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Ulmer eventually became the Director of Development for Florida's Levin College of Law before moving to UF's Warrington College of Business/Fisher School of Accounting as the Senior Director of Development.
In 2003, Ulmer was lured away from his alma mater to become the Assistant Dean for Development for Vanderbilt University's Law School where he guided the law school through a $28 million capital campaign. Three years later he was named Executive Director of Development for Vanderbilt's Commodore Club, the fund raising arm of Vanderbilt athletics. He was instrumental in restructuring Vanderbilt's major gift program, emphasizing philanthropic giving for capital and endowment initiatives.
At Ole Miss, Ulmer oversaw the UMAA Foundation's development team, with a primary mission of reaching out to alumni, donors and fans across the state of Mississippi and around the country in an effort to secure private resources for capital projects and scholarship support.
