Joe David Joins Teammate In U.S. Amateur
8/12/2009 | Men's Golf
David, who earned All-SEC second team honors as a freshman, shot 69-65--134 (-8) and finished tied for third. He won on the first playoff hole, as three players got in from this sectional qualifying site.
The 109th U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
"It's really exciting to be in the U.S. Amateur," David said. I have never qualified before. In fact, this was my first time to try and qualify. I played well and was just on the cut line of making it. Being there with Jonathan will be great. We're going to practice together and get prepared. It's such an honor to be in the field. It's a really tough course - a par 70. I've heard a lot about it, but I have never played it before."
Randolph qualified last week, winning the sectional qualifier at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Miss.
Southern Hills has a rich history of major championships. To date, Southern Hills has hosted 14 major championships including three U.S. Open Championships (1958, 1977, 2001) and an unprecedented four PGA Championships (1970, 1982, 1994, 2007).
Both David and Randolph played a huge role in the Rebels' getting to their third consecutive NCAA Regional last year.
"I am really happy for Joe," head coach Ernest Ross said. "We are proud to have two of our players qualify for this prestigious tournament. What a tremendous honor it is to make it to our national championship, and we look forward to following them the last week of August."
This marks the fourth straight year for the Rebels to be represented at the U.S. Amateur.
