Norris' 25 Kills Leads Rebels To Win Over SEMO

9/11/2009 | Volleyball

ATLANTA, Ga. - Katie Norris matched her career-high set a week ago with 25 kills on Friday to help Ole Miss (6-2) defeat Southeast Missouri State (3-4) by a score of 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20) in the first match of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic.

Norris' 25 kills tied her previous career-best set against UAB last Saturday in the Magnolia Invitational. Regina Thomas also came up big with 11 kills and hit .417 to help pace the offense. Miranda Kitts posted seven blocks to lead the net defense.

Morgan Springer led the Rebel defense on the back row with 25 digs for the match.

"This was a scrappy win. We're going to have to clean up our play on our side of the net if we want to be successful the rest of the weekend. I thought Katie Norris did a great job of being an offensive threat from all over the floor."

Ole Miss jumped out to the early lead in the first set, taking a 7-0 edge on the Red Hawks and holding the advantage throughout as the Rebels picked up a 25-16 win in the first set. Norris led the offense with six kills, while Thomas hit .800 and was 4-for-6 on the attack.

The second set saw a reversal of the first as the Red Hawks jumped out to the early lead on the Rebels, only to have Ole Miss fight back and tie the set at 15. After chipping away at the lead, the Rebels took the lead for good on a kill from Norris on the way to a 25-18 win in the second set.

Southeast Missouri State answered in the third frame, responding to an early Ole Miss run to tie things at 11. After trading scores, the Red Hawks moved into the lead for good in the set and claimed the third frame 25-18.

Ole Miss again fell behind early in the fourth set as Southeast Missouri State moved out to a four point lead and held he advantage until the Rebels tied things at 11. Back-to-back kills from Norris put Ole Miss in control the rest of the way, however, and the Rebels closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth frame.

Ole Miss will return to action on Saturday when the Rebels face Clemson at 9:30 a.m. and then take on host Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.
