Craven, Norris Lead Rebels In Loss At Kentucky

9/26/2009 | Volleyball

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Freshman outside hitter Whitney Craven returned to the lineup for the Rebels against No. 17 Kentucky (12-1, 2-0 SEC) on Friday, putting down a team-high eight kills with Katie Norris, but the duo couldn't do enough as Ole Miss (6-7, 0-3 SEC) fell to the Wildcats by a score of 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 11-25).

Craven and Norris put down eight kills each to lead the Rebels, while Miranda Kitts added seven kills on the night. Kitts hit .500 for the match with only one attack error on 12 attempts. Morgan Springer added 12 digs on the night to lead the back row defense.

The Rebels jumped out to a quick start on the Wildcats pushing out to an early lead that swelled to as much as eight points at 14-6. But Kentucky kept chipping away at the lead, eventually tying the set at 19 before the home team moved ahead of the Rebels at 21-20 and pushed ahead to take the first frame 25-22.

The second set opened with Kentucky running out to a quick 9-2 lead on the Rebels before Ole Miss put together a run to trim the lead to three at 9-6. The Wildcats again pushed out to a six point lead at 16-10, only to see the Rebels get a kill and a pair of service aces from Craven to trim the advantage to three once more. Ole Miss could get no closer, however, as another Kentucky run gave the Wildcats a 25-16 win in the second set.

The third set opened with the two teams trading scores early, but the Wildcats pushed out to a slim lead at 5-4 that grew to two points at 10-8. Kentucky began to pull away from there, pushing the lead out to 18-11. That would be as close as the Rebels would get as the Wildcats would close out the set with a seven point run to claim the set 25-11 and take the match.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels take on the Tennessee Lady Vols at 4 p.m. CST in a match televised by ESPNU live from Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
