BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss junior Barnabas Kirui was selected as the SEC Cross Country Athlete of the Week following his performance Saturday night at the Brooks Twilight Classic the conference office announced Tuesday.

Kirui, who missed all of last season and the majority of the 2007 season due to injury, captured the individual championship in the four mile race as he posted a first place finish with a new course record time of 19:00.77. He surpassed the previous course record time of 19:04.00 set by James Kiptoo of Harding University in 2005.

In addition, his time Saturday was nearly 12 seconds faster than his closest competition. His finish helped the men's team post a third place overall finish in the team standings.

Kirui and the Rebels return to action Sept. 26 at 9 a.m. when Ole Miss hosts the Pre-SEC Invitational from the Ole Miss Golf Course.
