OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss student-athletes are not only getting it done on the playing fields, but they are making tremendous strides in the classroom as well.
More than half of all Rebel student-athletes made one of the three Ole Miss Athletics Honor Rolls for the Fall 2009 semester, meaning that they earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher. The 187 student-athletes is a record number for Ole Miss.
Of those 187 student-athletes, 25 of them made a perfect 4.0 GPA, showing great dedication both on and off the field.
"It's wonderful to see our student-athletes excel in the classroom," said Karen Schiferl, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Support. "Our main objective is to not only have our student-athletes graduate, but to do so with honors."
Leading the way for the Rebels in the classroom was the women's soccer team, which placed 21 of the team's 26 players on one of the athletics honor rolls.
The soccer team also had the most student-athletes earn a 4.0 for the semester, as Dylan Jordan, Kendyl Mygatt, Alyssa Smith, Hannah Weatherly and Mary Bailey Wickham all landed on the Chancellor's Honor Roll.
All members of both the Ole Miss women's tennis and women's golf teams made a 3.0 GPA or higher, with Gabriela Rangel (tennis), Kathryn Fowler (golf) and Haley Millsap (golf) each earning a 4.0.
The Ole Miss softball and volleyball teams weren't far behind, with 14 of the softball team's 18 players and 11 of 15 volleyball players making an honor roll.
The defending SEC Champion Rebel baseball team placed a record 20 members on the honor rolls, including Alex Yarbrough and Scott Haltom who both earned a 4.0 and a spot on the Chancellor's Honor Roll.
Houston Nutt's two-time Cotton Bowl Champion Rebel football team had 42 players, the most ever, on one of the three honor rolls. Football players earning spots on the Chancellor's Honor Roll included Josh Lancaster, Bryan Powers and Wesley Phillips.
The men's and women's track teams had a combined 43 student-athletes perform well enough in the classroom to earn a spot on an honor roll. Track members who earned a 4.0 in the fall included Jonathan Hodges, Lee Moore, Al Lowe, Allison Kneip and Niesha Love.
While Ole Miss student-athletes continue to climb the national rankings in many sports, they are also raising their effort in academics and preparing for their futures. The 187 student-athletes on the fall honor rolls are up from the 142 that made it last spring.
"I think it's just part of athletics." Schiferl said. "Student-athletes are not satisfied with just being good enough and that translates to the classroom."
