1/7/2010 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. - For the fifth straight season, Ole Miss ranked in the top 10 nationally in baseball attendance as the Rebels claimed the third highest average attendance in the nation for the 2009 season.

With an average attendance of more than 7,000 fans per game and with more than 273,000 fans traveling to Oxford for games last season, Rebel fans proved that Swayze Field is a top destination for college baseball in America.

The Rebels were second in total attendance, but third in average attendance behind LSU (9,611) and Arkansas (7,906). Six teams from the Southeastern Conference were ranked in the top 10 in average attendance with all five of the top spots going to the SEC.

The ranking marks the fifth straight year the Rebels checked in with a top 10 ranking in attendance. Ole Miss has ranked among the top 25 nationally in attendance each year of the Mike Bianco era.

Since taking the helm of the program heading into the 2001 season, more than one million fans have traveled to Ole Miss to watch the Rebels take the field in baseball. Last season's tally of 273, 111 fans was the highest single season total for Ole Miss in school history.

The Rebels also set the single-game attendance mark against fifth-ranked Virginia in the NCAA Super Regional on June 6, with 10,323 fans on hand to watch the Rebels take on the Cavaliers for a berth in the College World Series.

Ole Miss opens the 2010 at home on February 19 against Louisiana-Monroe in the first game of a three-game series with the Warhawks.
