OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebel volleyball team was efficient in its execution on Sunday, dispatching the Bulldogs in straight sets as Ole Miss (12-5, 6-2 SEC) defeated Georgia (10-9, 2-6 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19).
The sweep gave the Rebels a sweep of the weekend as Ole Miss swept Auburn 3-0 on Friday night. The Rebels have posted sweeps of their last thee opponents with straight-set victories over Kentucky, Auburn and Georgia.
Ole Miss hit .318 against the Bulldogs and out-blocked Georgia 13.0 to 3.0 on the afternoon behind the solid net play of Miranda Kitts and Allegra Wells. Both players put down eight blocks on the afternoon and hit solidly as well.
Kitts hit .467 with seven kills and no attack errors, while Wells put down seven kills of her own. Regina Thomas continued her efficient performance at the net, hitting a team-leading .556 with six kills on nine swings. Whitney Craven paced the Rebel offense with 16 kills and hit .324 in the match.
Five Rebels hit over .300 for the contest and notched at least six kills.
"Allegra (Wells) had a big weekend for us," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "I'm proud of the way she played within herself and remained steady throughout both matches. When our block is there, it gives opposing hitters fewer options and that combined with our back row defense really can frustrate other teams. We have to continue to be steady with that and continue to frustrate other team's hitters.
"We have a big match coming up next Friday night with LSU on Fox Sports Net," Getzin said. "They are a team that is playing excellent volleyball right now and we will have to be ready for that."
The Rebels were ready for the Bulldogs on Sunday, racing out of the gates and never taking their foot off the peddle. Ole Miss jumped out to an 8-3 lead and forced Georgia into an early timeout as the Bulldogs sought to slow down the Rebel offense.
It didn't work.
Three kills later, the Rebels held an 11-3 lead and Georgia called its second timeout of the set. Ole Miss continued to apply pressure from there, racing on down the stretch to claim a 25-13 win in the opening set.
The second set opened with the Bulldogs matching Rebel scores early until Ole Miss snapped a 6-6 tie with a run the pushed the home team on top 13-8 and sent the Bulldogs into their second timeout of the set early in the frame. Once again, the breaks in action didn't slow down the Rebel attack as Ole Miss continued to pressure the Bulldogs and claimed the second set 25-14.
Georgia steadied things in the early stages of the third set, staying with the Rebels point-for-point before taking a 12-10 lead. Ole Miss used three straight scores to take the lead 13-12, though, and never trailed again. Georgia tied the score at 13 on the next point, but Ole Miss pushed back in front and held the advantage to the end. The Rebels claimed the match with a 25-19 win in set three.
Ole Miss returns to action next Friday when the Rebels will host Western Division leader and 15th-ranked LSU at 6:30 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center on campus. The match will be televised by Fox Sports Net as their volleyball match of the week. Admission is free.
