OXFORD, Miss.- Joe Getzin has won the "Go for the Goat" campaign put on recently by the Ole Miss Athletics Department and Café' Salon as fans voted with an overwhelming majority for the volleyball coach to keep his goatee, while soccer coach Matt Mott will be losing his.
As a part of a campaign to raise awareness for the two Rebel programs in a fun manner, fans were able to online and decide which head coach had the best goatee. As a consequence of losing the campaign, the defeated coach will have his goatee shaved at an upcoming match.
"I really appreciate all the fans who stepped up and voted for what is clearly the best goatee and allowed me to keep mine," Getzin said. "It's probably a good thing because this way it won't scare my children when I come home. I'm looking forward to Coach Mott coming to our match and taking care of business."
"Certainly I'm disappointed that I lost to Coach Getzin," Mott said. "I think it's clear fans weren't really voting on who had the better goatee, but congratulations to Coach Getzin on winning a hard fought campaign in Go for the Goat."
Getzin received an overwhelming majority of votes, defeating Mott 1500 to 869. As a result, Mott will have his goatee shaved by Café' Salon at the intermission of the volleyball match against South Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 31.
The match begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center and admission is free to the public.
