OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will begin the 2010-11 indoor track and field season this weekend at the Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic. The two-day meet begins Friday with the heptathlon and pentathlon before the majority of events take place on Saturday.
Head coach Joe Walker's squad returns six All-Americans and 23 school record holders. Ole Miss boasts two of the top returning high jumpers in the nation with All-Americans Ricky Robertson and Brian Knight. All-American sprinters Mike Granger and LaJada Baldwin will see their first action of the season, as well as dual-threat sprinter/hurdlers Lee Ellis Moore and Sofie Persson.
The majority of the Rebels' athletes will compete at this weekend's meet, which will focus on seeing where everyone is at in their fall training, but Knight and Moore are among those who will not participate.
In last year's indoor season, Robertson and Knight took home All-America honors in the high jump, Granger in the 60 meters and Persson in the 800 meters. Robertson finished runner-up at the NCAA Championships with a school-record leap of 7-04.50 to help the Rebel men finish in a tie for 20th.
Robertson also claimed the high jump title at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships and was named the SEC Indoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. He made the All-SEC first team, while Knight and Rachel Jenkins were second-team honorees. Robertson and Granger were both named to the SEC All-Freshman team.
The Rebels will have a month-long break before the next meet, which is Jan. 7 at the Arkansas Invitational. They are scheduled to compete at six total indoor meets prior to the SEC Championships, which will be held Feb. 25-27 in Fayetteville, Ark. The NCAA Championships are March 11-12 in College Station, Texas.
