Rebels Dominate Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic

12/4/2010 | Track and Field

Dec. 4, 2010

JONESBORO, Ark. - Ricky Robertson broke his own school record in the high jump and Ole Miss track and field athletes took home 11 first-place finishes to dominate their first indoor meet of the season at the Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic.

Standing out among the competitors on Saturday were All-Americans Robertson and LaJada Baldwin. Robertson's record leap of 7-05.00 won the high jump and is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Baldwin took home the women's 55-meter and 200-meter crowns with times of 7.03 and 24.08, respectively.

Other Rebel women to win their events were Sofie Persson in the 400 meters (54.13), Jazmin Miller in the weight throw (57-07.75), Brittany Bozeman in the long jump (19-01.25) and Fabia McDonald in the pentathlon (3,535 points).

On the men's side, other winners were Mike Granger in the 55 meters (6.21), Isiah Young in the 200 meters (21.48), Dante Oliver in the 400 meters (47.56) and Kipchirchir Kiptoo in the mile run (4:24.66).

Persson, who was an indoor All-American last year, got her season started with a strong performance in the 400. Her time of 54.13 is a personal best and one of the top five in school history. Miller also set a personal best with her victorious weight throw.

Granger continued where he left off in 2009-10, when he earned indoor All-America honors in the 60 meters. His mark of 6.21 seconds in the 55 meters on Saturday is a personal best and ranks second in school history.

All other running times on Saturday besides the 55 meters have been converted from a 200-meter flat track to match a 200-meter banked track, which is the NCAA standard.

On the women's side, Ole Miss especially dominated in the 200 meters and the long jump. Four Rebels finished in the top eight of the 200 meters, including Baldwin and Jasmine Williams going 1-2. In the long jump, Ole Miss claimed each of the top six spots, including Bozeman, Aria Gaines and Rachel Jenkins going 1-2-3.

The dominant events for the Rebel men were both of the quick sprints. Granger and Young went 1-2 in the 55 meters, which saw four Rebels in the top seven. Young, Granger and Oliver took the top three spots in the 200 meters.

Ole Miss has a month off before its next competition. The Rebels will travel to Fayetteville on Jan. 7 for the Arkansas Invitational.
