2/12/2010 | Softball
Corrine Doornberg led off the fifth with a single over third base, but was erased on an Ashley Dowdy fielder's choice. A fielding error by Oregon State second baseman Megan Doremus allowed Lauren Grill to reach and gave Ole Miss runners on first and second. Designated player Brittany Barnhill then singled to left to load the bases to bring Tramp to the plate. After an Amanda Hutcheson fielder's choice, Presswood laced a single to center to give the Rebels the lead.
"We came out and played better today," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The girls showed a lot of heart to come out and pick up two good wins today. We need to bring the same effort tomorrow."
Designated player Mary Claire Brenner gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to left. Starting pitcher Becky Nye had put two runners on with a walk and a hit by pitch with two down before Brenner's shot.
Tramp answered back for Ole Miss in the top of the second with a line-drive solo homer to left. It was Tramp's first home run of the season.
Tramp pulled the Rebels within 3-2 in the third with a two-out bases loaded single through the left side of the infield. She finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.
Dowdy added an RBI double in the sixth to extend the Ole Miss lead to 6-3. She went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the game.
Nye (1-2) picked up the complete-game win after striking out five batters and allowing only three runs on five hits in her 7.0 innings of work. Paige Hill took the loss for the Beavers after giving up four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.
Game Two
Lindsey Perry struck out eight batters and freshman Kelly Nolan hit a three-run home run as the Ole Miss Rebels defeated Ohio 7-3 on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by Arizona State.
Perry (1-0) earned the complete-game win after allowing only three runs, two earned, on three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Ohio struck in the top of the first after leadoff hitter Alexis Zambrana reached on a fielding error by Perry and later scored after she stole second and catcher Kelly Nolan's throw went into center.
Ole Miss tied the game at one in the third when Corrine Doornberg, who singled to right with one down, scored on Lauren Grill's single to left with two out in the frame. Bobcat starting pitcher Caitlin Colvin then walked designated player Britttany Barnhill before Nolan's first career homer gave the Rebels a 4-1 lead.
The Rebels added to the lead in the fourth. Brittany Broome, who pinch ran for Aly Presswood after a walk, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. Alyssa McGovern then singled to left and later scored after Ashley Dowdy reached on a fielding error. Grill singled to left to score Corrine Doornberg and extend the lead to 7-1.
Grill finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI and Doornberg added two hits and two runs scored in four at-bats.
Designated player Emily Wethington hit a two-run homer to bring Ohio with 7-3 in the sixth, but Perry shut down the Bobcats the rest of the way striking out the side in the seventh.
