Joe David Vaults Rebels Into Lead At Mobile Bay

2/22/2010 | Men's Golf

MOBILE, Ala. -- Ole Miss men's sophomore Joe David fired a 3-under 69 in the second round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Monday, to lead the Rebel golf team as they moved into first place heading into Tuesday's final round at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

The Rebels shot a 3-under 285 for their best round of the spring and at 576, lead Memphis (582) by six. Vanderbilt, Louisville and Iowa State are tied for third at 585.

David's 69 was good enough to move him into a tie for second with a 141, just two back of Middle Tennessee's Kent Bulle (139). Junior Jonathan Randolph, who captured his second career tournament title last weekend at the Gator Invitational, is just four back at 143. He carded a 72 today to go with Sunday's 71.

Freshman Pete Kellermann recorded a career best 71 in the second round and moved up to a tie for 17th along with teammate Tom Brown, who notched his second straight 73.

"Today, we had the best round of the spring as a team," head coach Ernest Ross said. "Every player shot 73 or better. Congratulations to Joe David on a very good 69 with only one bogey. Pete had his career best and looked very strong today. Jonathan was a little erratic today, but held it together for a solid 72. He still has a chance to win tomorrow. I was proud of our improvement and how we minimized our mistakes."

The Rebels will tee off the final round Tuesday beginning at 9:06 a.m. Fans can follow the team as they go for their first tournament title of the year by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the live scoring link in the Rebel Hub.
