Rebels Sweep A Pair At Red And Blue Classic

OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Lauren Grill blasted a two-run home run to left center to help lead Ole Miss to a 5-2 win over Centenary in game one of the Red and Blue Classic on Friday. Ole Miss pounded out 11 hits and scored five of its six innings, as the Rebels knocked off Murray State 9-1 in six innings in the second game of the day at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The two-run shot in the third was Grill's first home run of the season and brought home second baseman Corrine Doornberg, who had walked with one down in the inning. Grill finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

"It was a good day overall," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "We didn't hit as well as I would have like in the first game, but we came back really strong in the second game. Brittany (Barnhill) did an outstanding job on the mound in the second game. I thought Lindsey (Perry) didn't have her best stuff, but she fought and got the job done."

Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after lead-off hitter Corrine Doornberg walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Centenary starting pitcher Sara Dornelas.

Centenary tied the game at one in the second on a solo homer to left by left fielder Kelsey Regan.

Third baseman Amber Tramp added to the Ole Miss lead in the fifth with a two-RBI triple to right. Tramp went 1-for-2 for the game with two RBI.

Centenary catcher Haley Bassett cut the Rebel lead to 5-2 in the fifth with a solo homer to right, but that is as close as the Ladies would come.

Junior Lindsey Perry (3-1) picked the complete-game win after tying a career-high with ten strike outs. She allowed only two runs on three hits.

Ole Miss will continue action at the Red and Blue Classic tomorrow when the Rebels face off against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 12 p.m. The teams in the tournament will then be seeded based on record and will continue play.

Game Two

Ole Miss pounded out 11 hits and scored five of its six innings, as the Rebels knocked off Murray State 9-1 in six innings in the second game of day one of the Red and Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles from shortstop Lauren Grill and pitcher Brittany Barnhill. Grill knocked a double to center and then scored on Barnhill's two-bagger to left.

Doornberg added to the Ole Miss lead in the second with RBI single up the middle to score Alyssa McGovern, who had reached on an infield single to start the frame.

Grill walked to lead off the top of the third inning and moved to third on another double by Barnhill. Third baseman Cali Overbeck then knocked a double of her own down the left field line to drive in Grill and pinch runner Amanda Hutcheson to stake Ole Miss to a 4-0 advantage.

Right fielder Alyssa McGovern added an RBI triple and Aly Presswood hit an RBI single in the fifth to extend the Rebel lead to 6-0.

Ole Miss added three runs in the sixth, two of which came on a fielding error by Racer third baseman Stephanie Mattocks and the other on another RBI single by McGovern.

McGovern finished the game with a career-high four hits in four at-bats and tied a career high with three runs scored.

Barnhill (3-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth before a lead-off double from second baseman Lauren Buch, who later scored to cut the lead to 6-1.

Barnhill picked up the complete-game win striking out nine in 6.0 innings of work. She allowed only one run on just three hits and issued only one walk.
