Ole Miss Posts Last At-Bat Win Over SIU-Edwardsville

2/28/2010 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Alyssa McGovern hit a sac fly to center field and sophomore Cali Overbeck smashed an RBI single down the left field line in the top of eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and help Ole Miss (10-5) to a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on the final day of the Red and Blue Classic.

Tied at two in the top of the eighth, senior Alise Doubt was placed on second in accordance with the international tie-breaker to start the inning. Shortstop Lauren Grill then walked to give the Rebels runners on first and second. Designated player Kelly Nolan followed with a sac bunt to move both runners up and McGovern's sac fly to center scored Doubt to give the Rebels' their first lead of the game . After catcher Amber Tramp walked to load the bases, Overbeck slapped a single down the left field line to score Grill and give Ole Miss a 4-2 advantage.

Pitcher Brittany Barnhill then got three quick outs in the bottom of the eighth, two on strikes, to preserve the win for Ole Miss.

"I'm happy we found a way to win this one," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The girls fought and showed a lot of heart coming back down two runs in the seventh."

After being held scoreless for six innings, the Rebels finally jumped on the scoreboard in the seventh. With two out and nobody on in the top of the frame, Tramp laced a single up the middle and was pinch run for by Amanda Hutcheson. Overbeck then smashed a double into the left-center gap to score Hutcheson and cut the Cougar lead to 2-1. Barnhill tied the game at two with a double off the left-center wall to drive in Brittany Broome, who had pinch run for Overbeck.

Overbeck finished the game with two hits in four at-bats and tied a career high with two RBI, while Barnhill added a hit and an RBI in three at-bats.

SIU-Edwardsville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by first baseman Whitney Davis. The Cougars added to their lead in the second with an RBI single to center from center fielder Chaleen Rumpf.

Junior Lindsey Perry started for the Rebels and allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out two. Barnhill entered in relief of Perry in the third and struck out nine in 6.0 innings of work for the win. She allowed no runs and only one hit for her fifth victory of the year.

Next up, Ole Miss will host Central Arkansas for a single game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
