Nye Dominates As Rebels Sweep South Carolina
3/10/2010 | Softball
Nye was dominate in her 7.0 innings of work, allowing only a first-inning single and a seventh-inning double in her first shutout of the season and the tenth of her career. She struck out six batters and retired 20 of the last 22 batters she faced.
"Becky pitched absolutely great today," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "She was on top of her game and the whole team did a great job. We had a little bit of adversity in the second game, but we responded and remained focused."
The Rebels jumped on the scoreboard in the first after shortstop Lauren Grill tripled to center to drive in Ashley Dowdy and later scored on a Kelly Nolan sac bunt that gave Ole Miss a 2-0 lead.
The triple was Grill's third of the season and seventh of her career, which moves her into second place all-time in Ole Miss history just one behind former Rebel Heather Swinney. She finished the game with a triple and two walks.
First baseman Brittany Barnhill helped add to the Ole Miss lead in the sixth when she doubled to left center to start the inning. Barnhill was pinch run for by Amanda Hutcheson and she later scored on Alise Doubt's infield single to put the Rebels up 3-0.
Ole Miss will continue SEC action this weekend when the Rebels travel to Gainesville, Fla., for a three-game series with the Florida Gators. The Rebels and the Gators will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Game Two
First baseman Aly Presswood smashed a two-out, two-run double to left center in the fifth inning and Brittany Barnhill allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings of work, as Ole Miss knocked off South Carolina 6-3 to complete the two-game sweep on Wednesday.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Presswood's two-bagger scored Brittany Broome and Amber Tramp to give the Rebels their first lead of the game. Broome had entered the game to pinch run to Barnhill, who reached on an error with one down in the inning, and then moved to second on Tramp's single to left. Both runners moved into scoring position on an Alyssa McGovern groundout and scored on Presswood's base knock.
South Carolina took an early lead in the top of the first after shortstop Lauren Grill booted catcher P.J. Fulmer's bases-loaded ground ball and two runners scored to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 advantage.
Second baseman Corrine Doornberg answered back for the Rebels in the fourth with a two-out single up the middle to score Amanda Hutcheson and cut the Gamecock lead to 2-1.
Barnhill extended the Ole Miss lead in the sixth with a two-RBI double to the wall in right and Doornberg scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to put the Rebels up 6-2 entering the seventh.
Doornberg finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while Barnhill added two hits and two RBI in three at-bats.
