Barnhill Leads Rebels In Upset Of No. 4 Florida

3/13/2010 | Softball

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Brittany Barnhill pitched 8.0 innings and drove in three runs and the Rebel offense pounded out 13 hits, as Ole Miss (16-9, 3-1 SEC) posted a come-from-behind 6-4 win over No. 4 Florida in the second game of a double header on Saturday. It was the Rebels' first win over a top-5 team since Ole Miss knocked off then No. 1 Tennessee in 2007. Florida took the first game of the day 12-2 in five innings over the Rebels.

Tied at three entering the eighth, Ole Miss third baseman Cali Overbeck tripled right to lead off the inning before Florida pitcher Stephanie Brombacher quickly retired the next two batters. With two down and the go-ahead run on third, Alise Doubt singled sharply to Gator shortstop Brittany Walker and beat Walker's throw to first to allow Overbeck to score and give the Rebels the lead. After a Lauren Grill walk, Barnhill doubled off the top of the wall in right center to knocked in Doubt and Grill and extend the Ole Miss lead to 6-3.

Barnhill tied the game at three in the top of the seventh with a line-drive solo homer to center off Brombacher. It was Barnhill's second homer of the season and she finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.

"What an amazing game by the girls," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "They really came back and refocused after the first game. Brittany battled in the circle and had some big hits at the plate to make up for the walks she issued."

Barnhill (7-1) earned the complete-game win after allowing four runs, all earned, on ten hits. She struck out six and gave up 12 walks. The 12 walks were both an Ole Miss individual and team record for walks issued in a game.

Second baseman Corrine Doornberg hit a double off first baseman Megan Bush's body to lead off the top of the third and Grill walked to give the Rebels runners on first and second. With one down in the inning, Barnhill reached on an infield single to load the bases. Gator starting pitcher Ensley Gammel then walked catcher Amber Tramp on four pitches to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead before striking out Alyssa McGovern and getting Aly Presswood to ground out to end the inning.

Florida loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Barnhill got a pair of ground balls to end the inning and strand all three Gator runners.

Presswood added to the Ole Miss lead in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to right that scored Grill and gave the Rebels 2-0 advantage.

Gator left fielder Francesca Enea tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to right off Barnhill. Florida catcher Tiffany Delifce's RBI double to left later in the frame gave the Gators a 3-2 lead.

Florida added one run in the bottom of the eighth on a sac fly by DeFelice, but Barnhill got Walker to ground out to end the game.

The two teams take the field for the rubber-match at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Game One

Sophomore second baseman Corrine Doornberg went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and a run scored, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss fell to No. 4 Florida 12-2 in five innings at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on Saturday.

Doornberg led off the game with a bunt single and moved to second with one down after shortstop Lauren Grill walked. First baseman Brittany Barnhill then laced a single into left to score Doornberg and give the Rebels an early 1-0 lead. UF starting pitcher Stephanie Brumbacher hit catcher Amber Tramp to load the bases and then hit designated player Kelly Nolan to drive in Grill and put Ole Miss up 2-0 after a half inning.

The Gators answered back in the bottom of the first with four runs highlighted by a two-run home run to left by catcher Tiffany DeFelice to stake Florida to a 4-2 lead.

Florida extended the lead with four more runs in the third led by a two-run triple to right by shortstop Brittany Walker. Walker added a two-RBI double in the fourth to give the Gators a 12-2 lead.

Becky Nye suffered the loss for Ole Miss after allowing eight runs in 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Lindsey Perry entered in relief in the third and pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with two K's.
