Ole Miss Drops Rubber Match To No. 4 Florida

3/14/2010 | Softball

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Despite out hitting the Gators 10-4, the Ole Miss Rebels (16-10, 3-2 SEC) dropped the series rubber-match 5-3 to No. 4 Florida on Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville. The Rebels and the Gators split yesterday's double header with Ole Miss earning its first win over a top-five team since 2007.

Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded single up the middle by pitcher Brittany Barnhill that scored second baseman Corrine Doornberg. Doornberg had singled through the right side of the infield to lead off the game and moved over to third on a fielder's choice sac bunt by Alise Doubt and a single from shortstop Lauren Grill.

Rebel third baseman Cali Overbeck doubled down the left field line with one down in the second and moved to third on Alyssa McGovern's chopper over third base. Overbeck then scored on a Corrine Doornberg single to right to put Ole Miss up 2-0.

Florida answered back in the second with an RBI triple to right by first baseman Megan Bush to pull the Gators within 2-1. Lead-off hitter Aja Paculba then hit a two-run home run to left to give Florida a 3-2 lead after two innings. Bush added a sac fly to center in the third to extend the Gator lead to 4-2.

The Gators added another run in the fifth on a bloop single to center by Bush that gave Florida a 5-2 advantage after five complete.

Overbeck belted a solo homer to left to lead off the sixth to pull Ole Miss to within two runs. It was Overbeck's second home run of the season and she finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Grill and Doornberg also both added two hits in four at-bats.

Barnhill (7-2) started for Ole Miss and took the loss after allowing four runs, all earned, in 2.1 innings. She gave up two hits with one strike out and six walks. Becky Nye entered the game in relief in the third and pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Baton Rouge, La., for an SEC double header against the LSU Tigers on Wednesday. The first game will begin at 5 p.m. with the second game beginning immediately following.
