Ole Miss Drops A Pair To No. 14 LSU

3/18/2010 | Softball

BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior shortstop Lauren Grill went 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run, but it wasn't enough as No. 14 LSU swept a double-header from Ole Miss at Tiger Park on Wednesday. The Tigers knocked off the Rebels (16-12, 3-4 SEC) 7-1 in game one and 2-1 in the second game of the day.

LSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game one when designated player Juliana Santos reached on a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a stolen base and a ground out before scoring on a wild pitch by Rebel starting pitcher Brittany Barnhill.

The Tigers extended their lead to 7-0 in the fourth highlighted by a bases-loaded double from LSU first baseman Anissa Young and an RBI single by shortstop Allison Falcon.

The Rebels put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the second courtesy of an Amber Tramp hit-by-pitch and an Alyssa McGovern single, but LSU starting pitcher Cody Trahan retired the next three batters in order to end the Ole Miss scoring threat.

Grill put the Rebels on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a lead-off home run to straight away center that cut the LSU lead to 7-1. It was Grll's fourth homer of the season and 40th career round-tripper.

Barnhill (7-3) started and took the loss for the Rebels after allowing seven runs, three earned, in 3.2 innings. She struck out three and issued one walk. Lindsey Perry entered the game in relief in the fourth and pitched the final 2.1 innings. She gave up only two hits and no runs.

Ole Miss will return to Oxford this weekend for a three-game series against in-state rival Mississippi State. The Rebels and the Bulldogs will play a double-header at the Ole Miss Softball Complex on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game Two

Ole Miss out-hit No. 14 LSU 6-4, but the Rebels had two costly errors as the Tiger took game two of the double header 2-1 on Wednesday at Tiger Park.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Kirsten Shortridge scored from third with two outs on booted ground ball by Ole Miss starting pitcher Becky Nye. Shortridge had singled with one down in the frame and moved to third on a stolen base and a ground out before scoring on Nye's fielding error of a Rachel Mitchell grounder.

Ole Miss tried to answer back in the fourth after first baseman Brittany Barnhill singled to center to start the inning and was pinch ran for by Amanda Hutcheson, who moved to second on a sac bunt by designated player Amber Tramp. Right fielder Alyssa McGovern then rapped a single to center, but Hutcheson was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game for the second out of the frame and catcher Kelly Nolan ended the Rebel scoring threat by grounding out to first.

The Rebels tied the game in the fifth after second baseman Corrine Doornberg slapped a single into left that score third baseman Cali Overbeck. Overbeck had led off the frame with a double off the wall in left center and moved to third on a Courtnie Ghinaudo grounder.

LSU regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Shortridge singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a fielding error by second baseman Corrine Doornberg.

Becky Nye (4-6) went the distance for the Rebels allowing two runs, none earned, on four hits in 6.0 innings of work. She struck out five and walked two in the losing effort.
