3/20/2010 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel offense pounded out 18 hits, as Ole Miss (18-12, 5-4 SEC) swept a double-header from the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. Ole Miss knocked off MSU 6-4 in game one before tallying 12 hits in a 9-2 win in game two.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third in game one after left fielder Kaili Smith poked a three-run home run to left field. The three-run shot scored Chelsea Bramlett, who had reach on an error to start the frame, and Brittany Bell, who walked with one down in the inning.
Ole Miss answered back with five runs in the bottom of the third. Third baseman Cali Overbeck led off the inning with a solo home run to center and designated player Courtnie Ghinaudo followed with a single. After Ghinaudo moved to second on a Corrine Doornberg sac bunt, Alise Doubt and Lauren Grill both walked to load the bases for the Rebels. First baseman Brittany Barnhill then laced a single up the middle that scored Ghinaudo and Grill to tie the game at three before Amber Tramp's two-run single to center gave Ole Miss a 5-3 advantage.
"We did a great job of swinging the bat today," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "We got some big hits in both games to put pressure on them and Becky (Nye) and Brittany (Barnhill) both gave us good outings in the circle. It feels great anytime you can take two from Mississippi State."
Doornberg added to the Ole Miss lead in the fourth with an RBI single that scored Ghinaudo and extended the Rebel lead to 6-3. She finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Overbeck added a hit and two runs scored.
MSU cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth on an RBI double to center by first baseman Jessica Spain, but Ole Miss starting pitcher Becky Nye settled in and retired the Bulldogs in the sixth and seventh for the complete-game win. Nye pitched 7.0 innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out seven.
Ole Miss will go for the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Oxford. If the Rebels complete the sweep tomorrow it will be Ole Miss' first sweep of MSU since 2007 and their best SEC start through ten games in school history.
