Barnhill's Double Lifts Ole Miss Past Central Arkansas

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Brittany Barnhill smashed a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning to score Lauren Grill and help lift Ole Miss (11-5) to a 7-6 win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Barnhill's two-bagger broke a six-all tie in the sixth and was her fourth double of the season. Central Arkansas had tied the game in the fifth after first baseman Kasey Britt knocked a three-run homer to left center off starter Becky Nye.
Junior catcher Rachel Torres blasted a two-run home run to straight-away center in the bottom of the third inning. The homer was Torres' first of her career and gave the Rebels a 6-1 lead after three innings.
"It was a good night hitting all around," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "Brittany (Barnhill) got a big hit for us and Lindsey (Perry) came in and did a good job shutting them down."
Freshman designated player Kelly Nolan got the Rebels on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI double to center. Sophomore Amanda Hutcheson added an RBI groundout later in the frame to give Ole Miss a 3-0 lead after one. Senior shortstop Lauren Grill added a two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield in the second to extend the Ole Miss advantage to 4-0.
Grill finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Barnhill added a hit and an RBI in three at-bats.
The Bears cut the Rebel lead to 4-1 in the top of the third with a two-out RBI single to right by designated player Shayleen Ristau. Lead-off batter Sarah Garcia looped a double to right in the fourth to pull Central Arkansas to with 6-3.
Junior Lindsey Perry picked up the win in relief after entering in the sixth and pitching the final 1.1 innings. She allowed no runs and no hits, while striking out two. Becky Nye started for the Rebels and allowed five earned runs with seven strike outs in 5.2 innings.
Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Woodstock, Ga., for the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech beginning on Friday.
