Men's Tennis Downs Memphis 6-1

3/4/2010 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. -- It might have been windy and cold outside Wednesday, but that didn't bother the No. 15 nationally ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team as they downed Memphis 6-1 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

"This match will help us a lot in our preparation for a big weekend at Vanderbilt and Kentucky. This was exactly what we needed," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We'll most likely being playing outside at Vanderbilt, and we weathered the tough conditions today. We needed another outdoor match, we needed to be pushed, and we were."

The Rebels had to fend off the Tigers in doubles. After the Thiemann twins of Marcel and Chris won easily at No. 2, the Memphis duo of Jordan Smith and David Henry topped Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lutjen 8-6 at No. 1. At No. 3, Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Harry Fowler rallied from a 5-2 deficit to clinch the point in a tiebreaker, 9-8(4).

That would be as close as Memphis got, with Ole Miss dominating the singles. Forberg Skogeng cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over UM's Michael Janz at No. 4 singles, Chris Thiemann downed John Taylor 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and then Marcel Thiemann clinched the victory, taking out Smith 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

"I played really well, very consistent. It's hard to play in those conditions (wind and cold), because it's hard to get into a rhythm. But I found one today," Marcel Thiemann said.

With his win, Chris Thiemann remained undefeated in dual matches at 8-0. He has clinched four of the Rebels' eight wins this year.

"I am feeling really confident right now," Chris said. I have improved so much in the last six to eight months. I am a lot stronger."

Lutjen and Vorster both picked up straight set wins on the top two courts for the final 6-1 score.
