BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss jumper Ricky Robertson was selected as the 2010 Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman Field Athlete of the Year the conference office announced Thursday.
A native of Hernando, Miss., Robertson won the high jump and tied the school record last weekend at the SEC Indoor Championships by posting an NCAA automatic mark with a height of 7-04.25. He is currently tied for third in the NCAA in the high jump.
It was the second consecutive meet in which Robertson has won the high jump, as he accomplished the feat Feb. 13 at the SEC/Big 12/Conference USA Challenge with a height of 7-01.00.
"This a tremendous honor for both Ricky and Ole Miss," Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker said. "It says a lot about his character, toughness and athleticism to be able to come back from a broken foot so fast and become an SEC champion."
Arkansas' Dorian Ulrey was named Men's Runner of the Year and LSU's Walter Henning was named Men's Field Athlete of the Year. Freshman Men's Runner of the Year honor went to Alabama's Kirani James and Arkansas' Chris Bucknam was named Men's Coach of the Year.
James, who finished second at the SEC Championships in the 400 meters, is the World Indoor Junior record holder (45.24) and Henning is the SEC record holder with 78-1 in the weight throw.
On the women's side, Tennessee's Phoebe Wright was voted Women's Runner of the Year and Florida's Shara Proctor was voted Women's Field Athlete of the Year. There was a tie for Freshman Runner of the Year as Lanie Whittaker of Florida and Regina George of Arkansas were awarded the honors.
