Rebels Earn Split On Final Day Of Buzz Classic

3/7/2010 | Softball

WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Ole Miss pounded out 14 hits and used a six-run third inning to down Rhode Island 7-2 on the final day of the Buzz Classic on Sunday. The Rebels (13-8) dropped the second game of the day 1-0 to No. 9 Georgia Tech.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single down the right field line from designated player Erika Szymanski.

Ole Miss answered back in the third with a six-run outburst. The frame started with back-to-back home runs from designated player Kelly Noland and pitcher Brittany Barnhill. Nolan began the Rebel rally with a three-run home run deep to left field that gave Ole Miss a 3-1 advantage and Barnhill followed with a solo shot that put the Rebels up 4-1. The homers were Nolan's second of the season and Barnhill's first as a Rebel. Back-to-back doubles from Cali Overbeck and Aly Presswood extended the Ole Miss lead to 5-1 and Alise Doubt capped the inning with an RBI single to left center that scored Presswood.

The Rebels added another run in the seventh on an RBI double from left fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo that made the score 7-1 Ole Miss. Rhode Island added an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to bring the Rams to within 7-2.

Barnhill led the Rebel offensive charge with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs scored. Nolan added two hits and three RBI in four at-bats, while shortstop Lauren Grill picked up two hits and a walk in three at-bats.

Barnhill started for the Rebels and pitched the first 2.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out two. Becky Nye entered in relief in the third and pitched the final 5.0 innings for the win. She allowed one run on five hits and struck out four.

Next up, Ole Miss will open Southeastern Conference action on Wednesday when the Rebels welcome the South Carolina Gamecocks to Oxford for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Game Two

Senior Becky Nye pitched 6.0 innings and allowed only one run on two hits, but it wasn't enough as No. 9 Georgia Tech knocked off Ole Miss 1-0 in the final game of the Buzz Classic.

Nye struck out five in the complete-game effort. She issued four walks and the only run she allowed was a two-out RBI single up the middle by designated player Caitlin Jordan that gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

Georgia Tech starting pitcher Hope Rush earned the complete-game win after giving up two hits and no runs in 7.0 innings of work.

The Rebels could only produce two hits on the day - a third inning single from Alise Doubt and fifth inning single by Alyssa McGovern.

Nye shut down the No. 9 Yellow Jackets after the third inning run, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.
