Ole Miss Athletics Joins In Special Olympics Festivities

4/1/2010 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. -- Special Olympics were held in Oxford Wednesday, and Ole Miss Athletics took part to make it an exciting day for the athletes.

Events were staged on campus at the Gillom Sports Center and the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, which hosted the opening ceremonies.

A number of Rebel coaches and student-athletes joined in the festivities, whether visiting with the competitors, cheering them on or providing helpful pointers. Among the teams most actively involved were the football and men's and women's tennis squads.

"Those athletes give their all and compete to the fullest, and I wanted our players to see that," said head football coach Houston Nutt. "It's such an amazing event every year, and I'm glad our team could be a part of it. So many of them provide support to us, and it's the least we can do to go out and cheer them on."

"We've been involved in Special Olympics for the past three years, and it's always something we look forward to," said women's tennis coach Mark Beyers. "We're proud to be a part of it. It's such a great event, and the coaches and players are happy to help make it special again this year."
